Reductionism and Biological Complexity

چکیده
The biologist's progblem is the problem of complexity. According to the conventional wisdom, the way to study complex systems is by breaking them down into their parts. In Richard Dawkins's words, "the biologist tries to explain the workings, and coming into existence, of complex things in terms of simpler things. He can regard his task as done when he has arrived at entities so simple that they can be safely handed over to physicists."

Biological Complexity
Complexity is often defined in the language of mathematics, computers, or information theory. We examine biological complexity as it occurs in the cytoplasm’s relation to nuclear function, and in the case of epigenetics. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the pendulum swings between appreciation of biological holism and complexity, and reductionism. During the second half of the twentie...
متن کاملAlmost-anywhere theories: Reductionism and universality of emergence
Here, we aim to show that reductionism and emergence play a complementary role in understanding natural processes and in the dynamics of science explanation. In particular, we will show that the renormalization group—one of the most refined tools of Theoretical Physics—allows to understand the importance of emergent processes’ role in Nature identifying them as universal organization processes,...
متن کاملA review of agent-based modeling (ABM) concepts and some of its main applications in management science
We live in a very complex world where we face complex phenomena such as social norms and new technologies. To deal with such phenomena, social scientists often use reductionism approach where they reduce them to some lower-lever variables and model the relationships among them through a scheme of equations. This approach that is called equation based modeling (EBM) has some basic weaknesses in ...
متن کاملAspects of reductionism in religious studies
Reductionism is a major methodological mistake in research and generally in thought; because it can pose as an obstacle to comprehensive views about the researched issue. This issue is more tangible in religious phenomena - due to the multidimensional entity of this subject – and can be more destructive. A researcher through focusing on one role and aspect of religion and concentrating on a ...
متن کاملFrom Reductionism to Holism: Systems-oriented Approaches in Cancer Research
Somatic mutation theory of cancer has directed cancer research during the last century. A deluge of information on cellular, molecular, and genetic behavior was uncovered, but so was a mind-numbing complexity that still challenges research and concepts, and expectations in the war on cancer have by and large not been fulfilled. A change of paradigm beyond reductionism has been called for, espec...
